In order to ensure food security, rehabilitate the economic return of the resource poor farmers of the rainfed area through advance technological approaches for sustainability. Our main research areas are:

  • Development of varieties with deep root system, narrow leaves with less stomata and waxy nature of leaves
  • Development of bold seeded 3-4 seed / pod and short duration varieties of groundnut to enhance cropping intensity
  • Breeding of Kabli gram for Potohar region (medium & high rainfall area)
  • Use of innovative techniques like embryo rescue to facilitate distant hybridization for genetic base diversification of crops grown under rainfed conditions
  • Combining early stage drought tolerance and high temperature tolerance at critical grain fill stage in wheat
  • Research for high value crops like fruits and vegetables
  • Standardization of techniques for raising of Off-season different vegetables nursery in tunnels
  • Growing of Off-season vegetables in tunnels by using high efficiency drip irrigation methods innovative methods
  • Growing of medicinal plants (Ispaghol, Kalwangi, Zera)
  • Cultivation of Cotton, Soybean and cowpea in barani areas
  • Identification of good quality Peach varieties for Pothowar region
  • Establishment of multiplication blocks of Citrus (Succri & Blood Red), Grapes, Almond, Fig, Olive & Peach
  • Identification and propagation of suitable Olive cultivars for different agro-ecological zones of Punjab
  • Hybridization of cut flowers (Ranunculus) for high value hybrid varieties
  • Multiple cropping systems
  • Drip and bubbler irrigation to vegetables and orchards
