BARI has evaluated various olive cultivars with high promise of success in Pothwar and other areas of Punjab. The data on adaptability trials at farmers’ fields has revealed the wide adaptability of these cultivars. The concerted research efforts of BARI have led to development of two olive cultivars BARI Zaitoon-1 and BARI Zaitoon-2, which have been approved by Punjab Seed Council during the year 2011.
The institute has also assisted private sector in developing their own model orchards (GPUs and Multiplication blocks) each having olive plantation on more than 10 acres. The varieties grown on these orchards are BARI Zaitoon I, BARI Zaitoon II Gemlic, Coratina, Frontio, Arbequina, Arbosona, Koraneiki, Chetoui, Kalamata etc. These orchards are at various stages of olive fruiting as per planting time. The average fruit yield varies from 2 kg to 58 kg/ plant. In addition, nursery development facilities have also been supported at some of these farms. Development of olive growers associations is also in progress.
